This dispute is a perfect demonstration of how important it is to be very clear about what contracts you sign. Contracts are more powerful than default provisions of IP laws, because contracts are designed to override those provisions. And if you sign something that doesn't make sense for you, you will pay the price for it. There is a huge difference between buying IP and buying a stake in the revenue that the IP generates. The former allows you to control the use of the IP. The latter doesn't.
