EUIPO is notorious for its often arbitrary decisions about descriptiveness and non-distinctiveness. Too bad, few brand owners have the desire, or the budget, to appeal such decisions. And it's hard to blame them because, as you can gather from the article, it took the brand owner almost 3 years to get the court to acknowledge its rights to trademark the logo that EUIPO rejected.
