The reason it became about copyright is that unlike trademarks, worldwide copyright protection arises automatically, with no need to register your rights. It's not possible to copyright brand names or taglines, but you CAN assert copyright protection in the logos. This is exactly what Canada is doing in this case. It will be an interesting one.
