Trademark News & Screw-ups GoDaddy acquires blockchain trademark venture

Just to be clear, Cognate and other blockchain trademarking platforms do not help you secure your trademarks. At best, they may be useful in securing evidence of the use of your brand. Granted, there may be some value in securing such evidence. However, its usefulness is limited. Most countries do not recognize unregistered (common-law) trademarks. Therefore, even extensive use of your brand online will not create any trademark rights there. Even in countries that do provide some limited protection to unregistered trademarks, if you are serious enough to even consider enforcing your trademark rights, registering your trademark will be a much more effective solution compared to trying to prove your rights in court using blockchain records that purport to show your earlier use of a brand.
