Trademark News & Screw-ups The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has Granted Apple Four new Registered Trademark Certificates for the 'Clips' Icon & more

Why does Apple spend money trademarking the icons for their apps? Because these icons, no matter how ugly (boy, do I miss IOS 6's skeuomorphic design!), immediately identify a piece of software that millions of people use. When you have built something that is popular with your target market and you figured out a way to help them tell your product or service apart from products and services of your competitors, you do whatever it takes to own that, which identifies your product or service—even if it's an ugly icon that looks like it was created in Microsoft Word by a 7-year-old.
