With games, there is actually a better strategy. Yes, you start with having a professionally done trademark search to make sure you CAN own the brand in your core jurisdictions. Then you file ONE application in your home country prior to launch. This gives you a 6-month grace period (called conventional priority) that allows you to tile your trademark applications in other countries and date them back to your original filing date in your home country. Essentially, this allows you to safely launch your game, see if people care about it enough for the brand to have any value and if yes, expand your brand protection to other jurisdictions. Basically, by investing a few thousand dollars in your initial application, you buy time to either protect a winner or abandon a loser.
